Silk Escape Map

Un-hemmed square silk scarf with printed map of Burma printed on both sides:  Upper Burma and Assam on one side; Lower Burma and Siam on the reverse.

Maps like this could be stitched inside flight jackets or worn as neck scarves – if captured they were hidden from the enemy.

Maps were also sent in Red Cross parcels to prisoners of war, hidden in the sleeves of records or other gifts for the prisoners.  The Red Cross were unaware of this practice.
